Post-Remediation Assessment of Polluted Soil in Assa Community, Ohaji-Egbema L.G.A, Imo State.

The study assessed the post-remediation exercise carried out on polluted soil in Assa community in Egbema LGA of Imo State. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the remediation exercise on the crude-oil contaminated soil in the area 9 years after the remediation. The study area was divided into 3 zones as follows A= highly vegetated zone, B=moderately vegetated area and C= sparsely vegetated zone while D=served as control, 2km from the previously remediated area. Soil samples were collected from each zone at 0-15cm, 15-30cm and 30-45cmdepth using soil auger and stored in polyester bags. Samples for the physico-chemical and microbiological parameters were analyzed using standard methods. One- way ANOVA was used to determine the significant differences among sample locations.Results show that thephysico-chemical properties were significantly different among their locations. The results showed that the remediation exercise carried-out by land application did not properly recover the impacted soil to tolerable level. Amending the soil with organic and inorganic nutrients will help to improve thesoil nutrients, increase the THBC, TFCC and TCC at 30-45cm and reduce the TPH to a permissible limit for more ecological conservation and a sustainable environment in oil polluted areas.
